As the US Open kicked off this week, Above the Net was able to participate and see many of the top tennis players in the world. We saw Serena Williams practicing before her round 2 win against number 2 Anett Kontaveit. We saw Coco Gauff as she practiced after her she defeated Elena Ruse. We saw Nadal defeat Rinky Hijikata in the Men's round 1 singles and Naomi Osaka as she was defeated by number 19 ranked Danielle Collins. We saw Atlanta's own Taylor Townsend's doubles win in round 1 against Diez and Rus. In addition, we saw a host of other top players during our world-wind US Open experience.
On top of that we experienced the rich history of the Open including a special tribute to Althea Gibson and center stage acknowledgement of the importance of HBCUs participation in tennis. The Arthur Ashe Foundation shared with us more about the Legend and stadium namesake. They also generously gave us bookletts to be shared with our Above the Net NJTL.
We also were interviewed by the grounds media about our experience in the Arthur Ashe stadium and how Above the Net is impacting tennis in our community! To witness first hand the excitement and thrill of the US Open through the eyes of our very own protégé Delaney Jackson was both rewarding and motivating for our organization.
All in in, it was a fantastic opportunity to be immersed in the world of tennis. The insights that we learned from this experience, put us in a great position as we plan for Above the Net participants to attend the 2023 US Open.
Thank you to the USTA Tennis Champions' generous support that enabled us to attend. #USTATennisChampions. #USTA. #USTAOpen
