This week, Above the Net had the incredible honor of attending the 2025 US Open in New York City, thanks to an invitation extended by Golden Triangle, a Mississippi-based nonprofit tennis program. We were humbled to be one of the southern USTA/NJTL chapters chosen to take part in this historic moment—celebrating the 75th anniversary of Althea Gibson breaking the color barrier in tennis. Althea Gibson’s courage and trailblazing spirit paved the way for generations of players, and standing in her legacy was a powerful reminder for our young athletes of what perseverance, talent, and determination can achieve.
Before stepping into the electric atmosphere of the US Open, our players embarked on an unforgettable learning adventure through the heart of New York, guided by our own director, Caniece Haywood. For many of our youth, this was their very first trip to the city, and the vibrancy, culture, and history of New York quickly became part of their educational journey. The group explored Chinatown, wandering through bustling streets, visiting fresh fruit stands, and observing the rhythms of daily life in one of the city’s most colorful communities. A ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty gave them the chance to learn fascinating facts about Lady Liberty’s creation and the ideals she represents as a global symbol of hope and freedom. The visit to the 9/11 Memorial was a moment of deep reflection, allowing the group to honor the lives lost while learning about resilience, unity, and the history of that day. On Wall Street, the players walked the cobblestone paths, saw the famous Charging Bull, admired the Fearless Girl statue, and viewed the powerful sculpture known as The Triumph of the Human Spirit, which honors the lives of enslaved Africans and their descendants. These experiences showed how sports, history, and culture are all connected in shaping the world our youth live in.
The following day, our young players stepped into the world of professional tennis at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. They were welcomed into the Net Generation Zone, where interactive stations, games, and drills gave them an opportunity to sharpen their skills while absorbing the energy of the tournament. For many, the highlight was the once-in-a-lifetime chance to showcase their rallying skills on the courts of the US Open—an inspiring glimpse into what their futures could hold if they continue to work hard and dream big.
The excitement didn’t end there. The group spent the day exploring the US Open grounds, taking photos with the Althea Gibson statue, watching professional practice sessions up close, and cheering from the stands during thrilling matches that stretched late into the evening. It was a full day of both learning and inspiration, giving the players not only exposure to tennis at its highest level but also the chance to experience the atmosphere of a global sporting event firsthand.
This trip was more than just an outing—it was an opportunity to weave together history, culture, and sport. From honoring Althea Gibson’s legacy to standing in the very places where history has been written, our players were reminded that they, too, are part of a bigger story. As Above the Net continues to grow, experiences like these ensure that our youth see not only the possibilities within tennis but also the strength of character, leadership, and vision needed to thrive on and off the court.
