Once again we had the opportunity to send a group of kids to the USTA GA NJTL (National Junior Tennis and Learning) Leadership Camp! This time it was hosted at the South Fulton Tennis Center. At 16 kids, Above the Net had the second highest participation. Number one was the host site.
The day started by spreading the nearly 100 kids across 10 courts based on age and skill level. Everyone had the opportunity to experience new drills with coaches from around the NJTL network. After nearly 2 hours of drills the kids had a quick lunch and had the opportunity to hear a wonderful motivational speech by Patrick Muhammad, a local Farmer, who amongst other things said, “success starts with the soil! I will see you at the top because the bottom is already too crowded.”
He encouraged the kids to dream big and work hard! The kids also had the opportunity to do a little farming of their own! They were given pots, soil, and lettuce seeds and spent time planting their seeds and hopefully soon, seeing the fruits or shall I say lettuce of their labor!
The kids ended the day with the ever popular Quiz Bowl that challenged the kids knowledge of tennis facts about our modern day tennis super heroes like Venus, Serena, Tiafoe, Sloane, Coco, Madison, James, and Ben! While Above the Net didn't take the gold this year, they made a valiant effort and learned some African American Tennis history along the way!!
All in all, the leadership camp was an awesome experience and the perfect blend of Tennis and Learning to be expected at an NJTL centered event. Look forward to the next one in the Spring!!!
