Above the Net had the opportunity to view the screening of the soon to be released movie about the life of Arthur Ashe the Athlete, the Activist, the Champion. The event was sponsored by CNN Films in the ever popular Piedmont Park in the heart of Atlanta. USTA Southern's Director of Diversity, NJTL, and Grants kicked off the event highlighting her inspiration and start of her tennis journey and the lasting impact that Arthur Ashe had not only on the courts, but off the courts.
Rodney Harmon, GA Tech's Women's Tennis Coach then spoke about growing up and playing on the same courts as Ashe in Richmond, VA and the way that he mentored him.
The film was inspirational and enlightening. It highlighted how Ashe as a person evolved over time not only his game but his thinking and actions about how he could make an impact. From his stance against discrimination in the US and abroad to his fight for AIDS and women's rights, Ashe was far greater than a world renowned tennis player.
Check the movie out for yourself on Sunday June 26th at 9pm on CNN.
